• Scotland has three officially recognised languages: English, Scots (a relative of English) and Scottish Gaelic (a completely different language). • Scottish surnames are divided in two main categories : Gaelic names (typically starting with "Mac-" or "Mc-") and Germanic names (e.g. Barclay, Blair, Brown, Carmichael, Cumming, Hamilton, Howard, Melville, Menzies, Stewart...).

History

• The Bank of Scotland, founded in 1695, is the oldest surviving bank in the UK. It was also the first bank in Europe to print its own banknotes, a function it still performs today.

• Shortbread is Scotland's most famous biscuit.
• The most infamous Scottish dish is haggis, normally made with sheep's 'pluck' (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally boiled in the animal's stomach for approximately an hour. Haggis may be a very ancient European recipe. Although it is not known where it originated, a similar dish was already mentioned in Greece some 2,500 years ago.

Delicious Haggis

This is an authentic recipe from Scotland and the ingredients and methods of cooking may be unfamiliar but we hope you enjoy the results.

Ingredients

1 sheep's stomach or ox secum, cleaned and thoroughly, scalded, turned inside out and soaked overnight in cold salted water
heart and lungs of one lamb
450g/1lb beef or lamb trimmings, fat and lean
2 onions, finely chopped
225g/8oz oatmeal
1 tbsp salt
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp ground dried coriander
1 tsp mace
1 tsp nutmeg
water, enough to cook the haggis
stock from lungs and trimmings

Method

1. Wash the lungs, heart and liver (if using). Place in large pan of cold water with the meat trimmings and bring to the boil. Cook for about 2 hours.
2. When cooked, strain off the stock and set the stock aside.
3. Mince the lungs, heart and trimmings.
4. Put the minced mixture in a bowl and add the finely chopped onions, oatmeal and seasoning. Mix well and add enough stock to moisten the mixture. It should have a soft crumbly consistency.
5. Spoon the mixture into the sheep's stomach, so it's just over half full. Sew up the stomach with strong thread and prick a couple of times so it doesn't explode while cooking.
6. Put the haggis in a pan of boiling water (enough to cover it) and cook for 3 hours without a lid. Keep adding more water to keep it covered.
7. To serve, cut open the haggis and spoon out the filling. Serve with neeps (mashed swede or turnip) and tatties (mashed potatoes).

Our Environment -
how can you help to protect it?

Our planet is in trouble! Almost every day we hear of another problem that is really bad for the environment - and what a list of problems! - pollution, acid rain, global warming, the destruction of rainforests and other wildlife forms, the death of thousands of species of animals and plants....and so on.

Many of us are very worried about the future of our planet and if we do not find a way of solving the problems , we will pollute the environment even more.It all sounds so depressing - but every one of us, whatever age we are, can do something to help our environment.
Remember our 25 ideas to protect our environment !!!

Here are just a few examples and some ideas to help you to do something.We create such a lot of rubbish! Is all our rubbish really rubbish? If you think about it, much of what we throw away could be used again. It makes sense to recycle because much of our waste is made up of glass, metal, plastic and paper.
* Sort out your rubbish. Organic matter e.g. potato peelings, left over food, tea leaves etc. can be brought to a compost heap in the garden and used as a good, natural fertiliser for the plants. Aluminium cans, glass bottles and newspapers etc. can be taken to bottle and can banks and wastepaper skips.
* Use recycled paper to help save trees.
* Take your old clothes to charity shops. Some are sold, others are returned recycled.
*Do not buy plastic. It's hard to recycle. One way to cut down on plastic is not to buy plastic bags in supermarkets and use strong, long lasting shopping bags instead, or re-use plastic bags over and over again.
* Don't buy over-packed goods. Many things we buy have lots of plastic and paper around them.
*Never buy products made up of tropical hardwoods e.g. mahogany and teak.
* Use less energy by switching off lights when rooms are not in use, not wasting hot water, not overheating rooms and not boiling more water than necessary when making a cup of tea!
* Use a bicycle or walk instead of using a car for short trips.* If you see pollution, such as oil on the beach, report it to the local council.* Try to buy environment-friendly products.
* Don't waste electricity. Electricity is produced by burning coal, oil and gas and this action gives off carbon dioxide.

* Car fumes produce carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide - so use a bike or walk - it's good for you too!
* Recycle as much of your waste as you can.

* In many countries souvenirs are made from rare wildlife - never buy shells, coral or things made from elephant ivory, rhino horn or cat skin etc.

* If you have a garden at home, you could transform it into a mini nature wildlife garden.

Guy Fawkes Day

If you live in England you will know the very famous story of Guy Fawkes. He was a man who tried to blow up the English Houses of Parliament in 1605. Imagine that!

He and some of his friends dug a tunnel under Parliament, which is

where the laws are made in England. They rolled barrels of gunpowder under the rooms where the Members of Parliament and the King wanted to meet on 5 November. That was the day when Guy Fawkes

and his friends wanted to blow up Parliament. But, the night before

they could do it , the king's men found out about the plot.

They arrested Guy
Fawkes and took him to the Tower of London as a prisoner. At the Tower he told them of his plan to blow up Parliament, and he also gave them the names of all the other people who had helped him.

Now, every November 5 people in England celebrate Guy Fawkes Day.

Boys and girls get old clothes like an old suit or so and fill them with

straw to make a straw figure that looks like Guy Fawkes. If they can get a hat they use that, too. This figure is called a "Guy". It's something like a scarecrow. The children then put the guy in a wooden cart, take him from door to door and ask people for "A penny for the Guy, please."

When they have collected enough pennies they go and buy fireworks. As soon as it gets dark everyone, children and grown-ups, make a huge bonfire with wood and sticks, and they throw the straw Guy on it and set the bonfire alight.

Fawkes Night zählt zu den wichtigsten Feiertagen in England. Schon seit fast 400 Jahren versammeln sich am Abend des 5. Novembers die Leute in Dörfern und Städten, um die Feuerwerke zu bewundern und die Verbrennung der Strohpuppe des Guy Fawkes
auf dem Scheiterhaufen zu beobachten.

Wenn auch die Einzelheiten der historischen Ursprünge bei vielen Engländern weitgehend verblasst sind, so kennen doch die meisten wenigstens den Namen Guy Fawkes
und ein paar historische Fakten seiner Geschichte.

Doch wer war eigentlich jener Guy
Fawkes, der auch nach Hunderten von Jahren in England nicht ganz vergessen ist?

Guy Fawkes, als Sohn eines Rechtsanwalts 1570 unter

dem Namen Guido Fawkes
in York geboren, wurde pro-

testantisch erzogen und erst später Katholik. Berühmt wurde er durch den Gunpowder Plot ("Pulverver-

schwörung"), bei dem er 1605 unter der Anführung von

Robert Catesby zusammen miteinigen anderen Verschwörern das Parlamentsgebäude (Houses of Parliament) in die Luft sprengen wollte, um König James I und seine gesamte Regierung zu ermorden.

Die genaueren Hintergründe des Komplotts sind unklar, aber es wird als Versuch gesehen, die katholische Religion in England wieder einzuführen. Nachdem Königin Elizabeth I 1603 gestorben war, hatten die englischen

Katholiken gehofft, dass ihr Nachfolger James I mehr

Toleranz gegenüber ihrer Religion zeigen würde. Leider war das nicht der Fall und die Verschwörer, die alle Katholiken waren, wollten durch einen Sturz der Regierung die Verhältnisse verbessern.

Sie beschafften sich einige Fässer voll Schießpulver (gunpowder) und versteckten sie in einem Keller unter dem Regierungsgebäude. Die Detonation war für den Tag des

State Opening of Parliament geplant, einen Zeitpunkt, an

dem der König und alle anderen Adligen im Parlament anwesend gewesen wären. Ein anonymer Brief, der an Lord Monteagle, einen Katholiken, gerichtet war und ihn warnte, an diesem Tag nicht zum Parlament zu gehen, erreichte den König jedoch rechtzeitig. Der Keller wurde durchsucht und man fand Guy Fawkes und die Fässer. Er wurde verhaftet und der Anschlag konnte verhindert werden.

Guy Fawkes wurde zum Tower gebracht, des Hochverrats

angeklagt und später hingerichtet. Im Jahr 1606 erklärte das Parlament den 5. November zum offiziellen Feiertag und bis 1859 wurden an diesem Tag in allen Kirchen Gottesdienste abgehalten. Die Festlichkeiten zogen sich

über den ganzen Tag hin, mit Glockenläuten, Böllerschüssen und Bierausschank.

Das Parlamentsgebäude wird heute noch vor jedem State Opening of Parliament feierlich von Männern in traditionellen Uniformen des frühen 17. Jahrhunderts, die eine

Laterne tragen, durchsucht – eine Zeremonie in Erinnerung an den Gunpowder Plot.

Man verwendet "prop-words", wenn man ein schon einmal genanntes Nomen nicht wiederholen möchte. Im Deutschen bleibt das "prop-word" unübersetzt.

Adverbs of manner (Adverbien der Art und Weise)

Gebrauch:

Mr Connor is very careful. He always drives carefully.

Ein Adjektiv beschreibt ein Nomen (Person oder Sache) näher; es beantwortet die Frage: wie ist jemand oder etwas? Ein Adverb beschreibt ein Verb näher; es beantwortet die Frage, wie tut jemand etwas oder was geht mit einer Sache vor?

Bildung:

strong - strongly Grundregel: an das Adjektiv wird -ly angehängt

easy - easily y wird zu i

terrible - terribly ein stummes e fällt weg

electronic - electronically nach -ic wird -ally angehängt

good - well

fast - fast unregelmäßig

Ben played well yesterday. In Sätzen ohne Objekt stehen die Adverbien der Art und Weise unmittelbar

hinter dem Verb.

Ben plays football well. In Sätzen mit Objekt stehen die Adverbien der Art und Weise nach dem Objekt,

niemals zwischen Verb und Objekt!

- Sie sind auch Signalwörter für das Present Perfect

Will - future

I will be 18 next year.

I think you will like London.

I'm sure she will be back soon.

The sun is shining, it won't rain.

Form: will / won't + infinitive ( für alle Personen gleich)

Das will-future drückt Handlungen in der Zukunft aus, auf die man keinen Einfluss hat oder es werden Vermutungen geäußert (I think... , I'm sure...). Im Deutschen wird das will-future häufig durch das Präsens ausgedrückt.

Adverbial sub-clauses of time ( adverbiale Nebensätze der Zeit )

Everything will be ready when the party starts.

Mark won't open his presents before the guests arrive.

My parents won't stay
until the party ends.

Nebensätze der Zeit werden durch Konjunktionen wie when, before, after, until eingeleitet.

Hauptsatz: will-future

Nebensatz: Simple Present (nie: will-future!)

3. Will-future - going to-future

The weather will be great tomorrow. We are going to go swimming.

It will rain tomorrow, so the Snows are going to visit a museum.

Will-Future: Handlungen, die man nicht beeinflussen kann / Vermutungen (s.o.)

Going to-future: konkrete Pläne, Absichten (s. Buch 1, Unit 8).

Conditional clauses I (Bedingungssätze I)

If you go to the Indian restaurant , you will meet Sanjay.

If you buy a birthday present for Ben, he will be very happy.

Bedingungssatz: Simple Present

Hauptsatz: will-future

Hier drückt man aus, was geschieht, wenn eine bestimmt Bedingung erfüllt ist.

Diese Regel musst du noch nicht behalten. Sie wird in Buch 3, Unit 2 ausführlich behandelt.

The past progressive

1. Yesterday at 11 o'clock ……

…Nick was standing at the bus-stop….Debbie and Sally were playing tennis. …I was reading a book.

Das Past Progressive drückt aus, dass jemand zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt in der Vergangenheit dabei war, etwas zu tun.

2. I was washing my hair when you phoned.

Grandma was playing a video game when Ben left.

Oft beschreibt das Past Progressive eine Handlung, die gerade im Gange war, als eine zweite Handlung einsetzte. Die zweite Handlung steht dann im Simple Past.

Die beiden folgenden Themen werden hier nur kurz dargestellt. Sie werden in Buch 3 genauer behandelt:

Unit 3 / Unit 6

Relative clauses

The girl who is waiting at the airport is Ben's sister.

My aunt is the woman that's wearing the red coat.

There's the ferry which goes to England.

That's the bus that took us to London.

The dog which you saw yesterday is Ben's.

Relativsätze werden benutzt, um ein vorausgehendes Nomen näher zu bestimmen.

Ein Relativpronomen greift das Nomen wieder auf:

Questions Tags

You are Ben Scott, aren't you?

We can't go there and back in one day, can we?

You have already bought the tickets, haven't you?

The Scotts live in Ashton, don't they?

We didn't speak to them in English, did we?

Der Question Tag (Frageanhängsel) entspricht dem deutschen "nicht wahr? Es wird benutzt, wenn man vom Gesprächspartner Zustimmung erwartet.

Form: Hilfsverb (bejaht / verneint) + Personalpronomen

Achtung! Bei Vollverben wird der Question Tag mit don't / doesn't / didn't verneint.
